The DIY Bucket Test
Before calling a leak detection specialist, you can confirm whether your pool is actually losing water beyond normal evaporation using this simple at-home test. It takes less than 5 minutes to set up and gives you a clear answer in 24 hours.
Fill Your Pool to Normal Level
Make sure your pool is filled to its normal operating level. Turn off the auto-fill valve if you have one — you want to measure natural water loss only.
Prepare Your Bucket
Fill a 5-gallon bucket with pool water to about 1 inch from the top. Place the bucket on the first step of your pool so it's partially submerged. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool water level on the outside of the bucket with waterproof tape or a marker.
Wait 24 Hours
Leave the pool pump running on its normal schedule. Do not add water. After 24 hours, compare the two water levels.
Read the Results
If the pool water level has dropped MORE than the water level inside the bucket, your pool has a leak. Both levels should drop equally from evaporation — any extra drop in the pool indicates water loss through a leak.
Pro Tip: Run the test twice — once with the pump on and once with the pump off — to help identify whether the leak is in the plumbing (pump-on) or the shell (pump-off).
